“We’re redefining how developers collaborate with AI,” GitHub CEO Thomas Dohmke said at the Oct 1 launch.
GitHub Copilot 2.4 drops today, turning the single‑assistant model into a multi‑agent studio that can draft code, spin up containers, and even write test suites without you lifting a finger.
A massive update. The new UI is sleek — which I actually liked — but it crashes every time I open a PDF. And the beta felt like a whole new product.
What’s new in Copilot 2.4
Agent Toolkit lets you summon a “Code Generator”, a “Bug‑Fixer”, and a “Docs Writer” from the same sidebar. Each runs in its own sandbox, so you can keep the LLMs isolated.
Because the agents share a common context, the Docs Writer can pull comments that the Code Generator just added, producing inline docs in seconds.
But the real kicker is Copilot Studio, which stitches the agents together into a pipeline you configure with a simple YAML file named copilot.yml. I tested the beta for a week and it completely changed my workflow.
How multi‑agent works
The backend runs on GitHub’s own “Octo‑Model” v3.1, an evolution of the GPT‑4‑based engine that powers the original Copilot. Octo‑Model can spin up up to four parallel agents per session, each with its own temperature and token limits.
So you can ask the Bug‑Fixer to rewrite a function while the Test Generator builds a coverage suite, then hand the result to the Docs Writer. The agents talk over a secure message bus, eliminating the need for you to copy‑paste.
In my experience coding, the speed boost is tangible — I went from a 3‑hour debugging marathon to a 45‑minute turnaround.
“Multi‑agent Copilot is a game‑changer for developers,” Dohmke added.
GitHub also announced tighter integration with GitHub Actions, so agents can trigger CI pipelines automatically.
For teams concerned about security, each agent runs on encrypted VMs and respects the same permission scopes as the user’s token.
Not worth it? I’d say the productivity gains outweigh the learning curve.
The Bottom Line
- Copilot 2.4 introduces three built‑in agents.
- Agents share context via
copilot.yml. - Runs on Octo‑Model v3.1, supports four parallel agents.
- Deep GitHub Actions integration.
