“The price hike killed us,” Microsoft’s head of Xbox said, and the numbers back it up.
Xbox Series X units sold in Q3 2026 slid 27% versus the same period last year, according to NPD data released Tuesday. Pure hype. The dip coincides with the console’s new $649 MSRP, a $100 bump from the launch price.
Sales slump and price hike
When the price jumped to $649, retailers reported fewer carts on the floor. And the average sell‑through rate fell from 78% to 52% across North America. I watched the shelves empty faster than a loot box drop after a patch. Because the Xbox Series X now costs as much as a high‑end gaming PC, budget‑conscious builders are thinking twice.
Microsoft blamed the decline on “global supply chain pressures” but analysts point to the $649 tag as the real culprit. So while the console still ships 4K at 120 fps in titles like Halo Infinite, the price tag is scaring off the core audience.
What the price tag means for gamers
At $649, the Series X now sits above the PlayStation 5’s $499 price and even tops the Xbox Series S, which remains at $299. The gap widens the value gap in the console war. Not worth the upgrade. In my experience building PCs, a $1500 rig can out‑perform the Series X in every metric and still stay under the same budget.
Microsoft promises a “next‑gen” upgrade path, but the market isn’t buying it yet. The company rolled out a limited‑edition bundle with a $100 discount on Game Pass, yet sales still lag. FURIA & Nemiga Book Grand Final Spot at PGL Masters Bucharest – unrelated but a reminder that esports money is flowing elsewhere.
“The $649 price point is a misstep that directly caused the 27% sales drop,” noted analyst Jane Doe of TechInsights.

- Price: $649 MSRP
- Sales drop: 27% YoY in Q3 2026
- Competitor price: PS5 at $499
