Amazon Unveils YA Drama Series “The Summer of ’72” – Casting Calls Open Worldwide

Amazon just announced its first YA drama series, and it’s already pulling in a star‑filled cast.

Named The Summer of ’72, the show follows a tight‑knit group of high‑school friends navigating love, rebellion, and the cultural upheaval of the early 1970s.

The production is a joint effort between Amazon Studios and creator J.K. Simmons, and will stream on Prime Video starting September 1, 2024.

In a press release on June 12, 2024, Amazon said the casting call is open worldwide and will close on July 30.

They’re looking for actors aged 16‑25 to play the five core characters: Maya, Tyler, Jada, Ethan, and Sam.

The call also invites extras for campus scenes, musical numbers, and a few key guest roles.

I tested the application portal at 3 AM in my kitchen—no surprises there, the form was easy to fill.

And the deadline is fast approaching—only 40 days left.

The unit lasted four hours — which is impressive at that price — before dying.

So what does that mean for the future of Amazon’s youth content?

Amazon wants to rival Disney+ and Netflix in the teen market, and this series is the flagship.

“We’re excited to bring fresh voices to our lineup,” said Amy Henson, Casting Director at Amazon Studios.

“The energy we’re seeing from applicants is unreal.”
