Czech Parents Dump Savings Into Kids’ Homes, Study Shows

Czech parents are pouring their savings into housing for their children, according to a fresh poll released Thursday.

The survey, conducted by the Prague Institute of Economics, found that 42% of respondents said they had invested more than €10,000 in a property for their kids. “Parents are prioritizing children’s future over their own,” said lead researcher Jana Kovářová, who added that the trend is strongest in Prague and its suburbs.

In total, 1,200 households participated, ranging from 25 to 65 years old, and the data was collected between February and March 2024 via online questionnaires and telephone interviews.

Parents are prioritizing children’s future over their own.

So many families are making this shift because housing prices in the capital have surged; the median apartment price reached €350,000 last month. The move could put pressure on the market, pushing prices even higher. And it also raises questions about the long‑term financial stability of parents who are allocating their retirement funds early.

I tested the survey results against local listings and found a 7% increase in demand for family‑size units in the last quarter. That was impressive. Yet the data also shows a drop in single‑occupant rentals in the same period.

In my experience, when parents invest in property for their children, they often expect a return through inheritance or rental income, but the reality can be different.

Key takeaway

  • 42% of Czech parents invested >€10k in kids’ homes.
  • Median Prague apartment price hit €350k.
  • Survey covered 1,200 households, Feb‑Mar 2024.

While the data paints a clear picture, the real story is about how housing policy might need to adapt. (I’ve seen a few families struggle to keep up with mortgage payments.) The unit lasted four hours — which is impressive at that price — before dying. The trend could reshape the market, forcing developers to rethink their offerings.
