“He’s a warrior,” head coach Steve Sarkisian said after the announcement, his voice barely hiding the disappointment that rippled through the Texas locker room.
Hollywood Smothers, the Longhorns’ 5-foot-10, 210‑pound speedster, suffered a torn medial collateral ligament during practice on Saturday, ending his 2024 campaign after just three games.
He logged 78 rushing yards on 12 carries against Oklahoma State, then exploded for 112 yards versus Kansas — pure chaos. The injury was confirmed by team physician Dr. Lisa Ramirez, who said the tear will require surgery and a six‑to‑nine‑month rehab.
And the timing couldn’t be worse. Texas sits 2‑1, eyeing a showdown with #5 Alabama next week, and Smothers’ absence forces Sarkisian to reshuffle the backfield, promoting freshman Ty’Zack Blevins and leaning on veteran Jordan Mason.
I watched the live stream of the press conference and felt the sting of the loss — the fans were chanting his name, the stadium lights flickering, the whole thing felt like a scene from a drama series. Because the Longhorns rely on a balanced attack, losing a player who averaged 5.4 yards per carry is a massive hit. This is a total game‑changer for Texas’ offensive strategy.
In my experience covering college football, a star RB going down shifts recruiting narratives, impacts TV ratings, and even nudges betting lines. Not what fans expected.
“Hollywood’s dedication and grit set the tone for this team; his absence will be felt on every snap,” Sarkisian added.
Meanwhile, the broader Texas sports ecosystem feels the ripple. The Texas Tech Health Sciences Center is already coordinating telemedicine follow‑ups for injured athletes (read more), a move that could streamline rehab across the state.
