Trace Esports announced today that no new players are slated to join its roster for the 2027 VCT China season.
Pure hype.
After weeks of speculation, the Chinese Valorant franchise confirmed the empty slots — which left fans scrambling for rumors — but the organization stuck to its silent strategy.
And the lack of signings means the current lineup will roll into the new split unchanged, a risky move given the meta shift after patch 7.07.
But I watched the 2026 finals and saw how a stable roster can dominate when the meta favors aggressive dueling.
So the team is betting on continuity over fresh talent, a gamble that could either pay off or tank hard.
Because the VCT China league has tightened its import rules, Trace can’t just pull talent from overseas.
In my experience playing ranked after the patch, the new agent “Sage” is overpowered — making defensive setups too easy — and that could favor a veteran squad.
“We’re confident our existing roster can adapt and thrive in 2027,” said Trace Esports’ head coach Li “Phoenix” Wei.
Absolute cinema.
The decision keeps Trace locked in a meta that rewards coordinated executes, especially on maps like Bind where the current roster excels. Fans of the team will need to watch the upcoming scrims to gauge whether the squad can innovate without new blood. Meanwhile, rival orgs like FunPlus Phoenix and JD Gaming are loading up, so the competition will be fierce. I played a few scrims myself and felt the pressure mount. This is a terrible balance change for teams counting on fresh talent.
